Summer DC Internships

Do you need/want an internship this summer? Perhaps in Washington DC? If so, check these opportunities out of possible internships to serve alongside our elected officials.

Most deadlines fall sometime in March, however Congressman Lucas' deadline is on February 10.

Senator Jim Inhofe

Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation's Wildlife Leadership Awards program

The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation (RMEF) is currently seeking applications for their Wildlife Leadership Awards program. Each year, they award scholarships of $2,000 to outstanding Juniors and Seniors studying Wildlife Sciences.

VitaFerm Sure Champ Offers Internship Opportunities

Saint Joseph, MO — Sure Champ has a strong commitment to youth in agriculture. With the success of last year’s inaugural internship program Sure Champ will be growing their program to offer two internship positions for Summer 2012.

Sure Champ is offering incoming college juniors and seniors an opportunity to gain experience in the marketing, development and sales of a show feed supplement. Two internships will be offered – public relations/sales internship and sales internship.

Applicants must be enrolled in an agriculture-related major, be able to work individually and in a team environment, have excellent communication skills, understand the show livestock industry, possess a strong work ethic and have prior internship or work experience in agricultural related fields. The public relation/sales internship will also require strong writing, editing and design skills. Experience in social media, photography and video would be of benefit.

The internships will be based out of St. Joseph, Mo., with travel to major livestock junior nationals. The internships will begin June 1 and conclude Aug. 3.

CASNR Scholarship and Award Applications Now Available!

Students who will be continuing their education next year with the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources are urged to apply for a scholarship offered by CASNR. Annually, CASNR will award over $1 million in scholarships to incoming and current students. You can fill out the application ONLINE by visiting http://casnr.okstate.edu/current-students/scholarships-and-aid/casnr-on-line-scholarship-application. Deadline is January 15.

Also, two different award applications are now ready for you to view and apply. Any CASNR student who will be graduating in the Fall 2011, Spring 2012, or Summer 2012 semesters may fill out the CASNR Outstanding Senior & Dean Fred LeCrone Leadership Award application. Also, sophomores who have completed their first year at CASNR can apply for the Browning Outstanding Freshmen Award. CASNR students, there is another scholarship opportunity for you. The Hazing Awareness Scholarship is awarded every month. Applications are due in by the 6^th of every month.

Certified Angus Beef to offer $20,000 in scholarships!

Are you a college junior, senior, or graduate student? Are you interested in the beef industry? Well then don't pass up on this opportunity for scholarships (yes, plural) offered by Certified Angus Beef. CAB is currently accepting applications through Dec. 2 to award scholarships to 5 individuals in the amount of $5,000, $4,000, $3,000, $2,000, and $1,000. Applicants will be selected based on involvement, scholastic achievement, communication skills, and reference letters.

In addition, this year CAB is offering a new scholarship opportunity for graduate students who are completing research that relates to high-quality beef production. One individual will be awarded a scholarship for $5,000.

Meat Judging Team Places at the American Royal

During their trip to Omaha, Neb., the 2011 Meat Judging Team placed 3rd overall and 1st in pork judging. The team also placed 2nd in placings, 3rd in beef judging & reasons, and 5th in pork judging. Individual results are as followed:

McKenzie Clifton: HIGH Individual; 1st-pork judging and reasons; 2nd-placings and beef judging
Katie Powers: 3rd-pork judging
Eldon Campbell: 2nd-specifications; 4th-placings
Kassie Winn: 5th-pork judging

Additional Meat Judging team members: Jessica Baggerman, Ashley Bradbeary, Ashley Collins, Ashley Hollis, and Jenna O'Daniel.

Oklahoma State's meat judging team will judge at the Cargill contest in Plainview, Texas, next week. The team is coached by Gretchen Hilton. Congrats, Oklahoma State!

Totusek Award

One of our own students grabbed the high-individual overall award at the annual Oklahoma State Block and Bridle Contest this past Thursday. Tyler White, animal science student, also received the Totusek Award during this time. Over 100 potential animal science students from 7 different junior colleges and high schools attended this year's event. The Block and Bridle contest also featured animals from the purebred livestock herds. Congratulations, Tyler!

Weyerhaeuser Interviews – Moved to Wednesday, November 2nd

Representatives from Weyerhaeuser will be on campus to recruit CASNR students on November 1^st and November 2^nd for their summer internship opportunities.  The representatives will host a meeting with the OSU Forestry Club on Tuesday evening, November 1^st, and will interview students for two different internship opportunities on Wednesday, November 2^nd.  Opportunities are of relevance to students studying Natural Resource Ecology & Management, Horticulture, Plant & Soil Sciences, and Biosystems & Agricultural Engineering.  Full position descriptions for these opportunities are pasted at the end of this message.  Students interested in interviewing for these opportunities should bring a professional copy of their résumé to the CASNR Student Success Center, 103 Ag Hall, and sign up for an interview time.  Interviews will be conducted on Wednesday, November 2nd, in the Student Success Center board room, 103 Ag Hall.

Wichita Externship during Fall Break – Application Deadline, Friday October 7th

Each semester CASNR Career Services plans group externship experiences for CASNR students to assist them with learning about the background and real world practices of agricultural and natural resources-related businesses, with exploring career opportunities, and with developing their professional networks.  Organizations provide:

·         An overview of their organization,

·         An understanding of potential internship and/or fulltime career options/opportunities,

·         A perspective of how various functions and specific positions within an organization connect and collaborate to accomplish the businesses’ mission, and

·         Any additional “real world” words of wisdom or recommendations of benefit to college students planning to pursue a variety of careers in the agriculture and natural resources fields.

CASNR Career Services will be taking three vans of students to Wichita, Kansas on Friday, October 14^th, to visit Koch Industries (http://www.kochind.com/), CNH (http://www.cnh.com/Pages/home.aspx), and Cargill, Inc. (http://www.cargill.com/).  Students interested in participating in the trip should submit a professional résumé and a brief (250 words maximum) statement of why they would like to attend to the CASNR Student Success Center, 103 Ag Hall, before 5:00 p.m. on this Friday, October 7th.  Selected students will be notified via e-mail before noon on Monday, October 10^th.

Are you unsure about your résumé?

Bring a copy of your résumé by the Student Success Center (103 Ag Hall) Wednesday, September 14 from 4:00-8:00 pm for CASNR’s Résumé Critique Night. The Career Liaisons will be on hand to offer tips for creating a marketable résumé, to proof read your résumé, and to answer any questions that you may have.

Remember that Career Fair is next Wednesday, September 21, from 12:30-4:30 pm at the Wes Watkins Exhibit Hall. You will need to bring multiple copies of your résumé with you so take advantage of this opportunity to ensure your résumé is the best is can possibly be! Freshmen Days in the SSC

Are you a freshman in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources? Make a visit to the Student Success Center (103 Ag Hall) on Thursday, September 1, or Friday, September 2, to get to know our staff and student leaders! Also learn about the services offered by the Student Success Center and how our office can be of support to you during your first year of college.

Another advantage of joining us for Freshmen Days in the SSC, is the opportunity to get a free CASNR spirit T-shirt! The first 25 CASNR freshmen who arrive in our office will receive one of these shirts completely FREE! These shirts are brand new; be one of the first to have one!

Welcome, Dr. Porter!

During the past summer, the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources Academic Programs have undergone some changes in regards to staff. Dr. David Porter, Plant and Soil Sciences Department Head, has stepped into the Interim Associate Dean position for the College.

Dr. Porter is a native of Tulsa, Okla. He served four years in the United States Marine Corps before starting his college education at the University of the Philippines at Los Baños. After two years at UPLB, he transferred to OSU and received a B.S. degree in agronomy in 1981, and an M.S. degree in agronomy in 1983. He then worked as a Rice Agronomist for Ring Around Products in south Texas prior to attending Texas Tech University, where he received a Ph.D. in agronomy in 1990. Dr. Porter joined OSU as Department Head of Plant and Soil Sciences in 2007 after serving 17 years with the USDA Agricultural Research Service.

Please take time this semester and stop by 136 Ag Hall to meet Dr. Porter. He is looking forward to meeting all of you.
